Western Gothic: An Edgy Spin on a Traditional Theme

For this week’s post, I felt inspired by the “punchy” western aesthetic that has been trending for the past several months to create a design reminiscent of the west’s “rugged fashions” with a sultry ‘twist’ by mixing textures and colors both rustic and luxe. One of my favorites of the designs I’ve posted to date, I feel that this design embodies my multi-faceted lifestyle and passions while walking a balanced line between the masculine and feminine gaze, ultimately making for a space that I would describe as bold yet sophisticated. For those interested in this design or similar themes, but hesitant to dive into a darker color palette, follow along as we break down how to add energy back into a moody atmosphere.

Starting off with what seems like the most obvious headlining element of this kitchen and bath is Cambria’s “Inverness Stonestreet”. Made to mimic soapstone, with all of the benefits of quartz, the “Inverness Stonestreet” features a charcoal body with subtle grey veins across a matte leathered surface which flows with the unassuming theme created by neighboring elements within the room while making a statement.

Adjacent to the countertops, Bella’s “Old Chicago” 4x8 1/2 face-cut bricks hone in even further to the bygone era of the old west as their authentic look is actually attributed to the demolished buildings in Chicago from which they are sourced from. We love this product for everything from walls to entryways for anyone looking to sprinkle a touch of “something borrowed” into a rustic space. Just be sure to specify that you’d like a grout width of roughly 3/4" for a more traditional look!

Bringing out the terracotta color within the bricks, Jaipur’s “Zefira” rug, displayed in a vibrant colorway of reds, oranges, blacks, and browns, meshes beautifully into this design and brings energy into the dark space reminiscent of red clay and desert sunsets. Inspired by traditional Turkish designs with a lightly distressed pattern, this rug incorporates all of the colors used throughout this space making it feel more grounded and cohesive.

Venturing into the bathroom, as soon as I stumbled across York’s new “Ophidia” wallcovering collection, I was determined to find a way to incorporate it within this design. Featuring waves of serpentine forms over a backdrop mimicking a woven texture similar to that of grass cloth, this wallpaper depicted in the color “brown” adds a bold ‘edge’ into this space while coinciding with the overarching western theme. By pairing the organic pattern of this wallpaper with the geometric outline of the aged brass accent mirror featured above the sink, we love how the combination of the two brought a sense of eclectic modernity into this bath.
