Mixing Warm and Cool Tones for an Elevated Look

Venturing into design concepts that offer more of an “unexpected” take on home design, this week we’ll be un-wrapping the key components featured in this kitchen, living space, and bath that elevate the style of the rooms past what you would see on pages and pages of beige rooms on Pinterest. By taking what some would traditionally consider a broken “rule” of design, and mixing warm tones with cool toned elements throughout the space, each piece in this room collides to create an “edgy” more contemporary feel, contrasting each other just enough as not to overpower one another. For those looking to renovate their space but are hesitant to dive fully into a new theme, we hope this week’s post encourages you to take a step past the ordinary, and lean into the contrast that is created when mixing the old with the new, as after all, there are no hard rules when it comes to design.

At the base of this board, we started with a palette of warm browns and smokey greys and blues which can be seen in the cabinetry, wall art, the area rug, and the tan leather sofa that adorns the living room. Effectively combining all of these tones into one piece, Thibaut’s “St. Martin” grass cloth wallpaper in the color “Grey” subtly nods to the color scheme of this design, while its woven texture aids in incorporating a more “natural” element to contrast the “cool” tones throughout the space.

Likewise, the bathroom floor tile from Cancos Tile and Stone in the “Nolita” 24" x 24" deco adds a contemporary touch similar to that of terrazzo, with a “cubism” flare, combining hints of warm brown and cool grey stone visuals all in a porcelain format for excellent durability and water resistance. Additionally, as trends are moving towards larger format tile options for cleaner lines, this tile is a great option for those that dread large obvious grout lines.

Lastly, adding a “fun” touch within the living area, the “Sancia” chandelier from Terracotta blends perfectly into the theme of the space due to its modern silhouette and antique brass finish. While mixing warm and cool tones throughout this design, another note looms throughout the room in the shapes and textures brought in by the color palette that plays on the idea of mixing organic and contemporary. Looking towards the rectilinear backsplash, the wavey round shapes of the glass disks forming the “bowl” shape of this fixture, brings harmony and warmth into the living room in a way that is absolutely show stopping.
