“Japandi” Interior Design: Fusing Japanese Aesthetics with Scandinavian Design to Create a One of a Kind Space

Japandi style is a fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics (such as Feng Shui and Wabi-Sabi) with minimalist Scandinavian interior design. Using a natural color pallet featuring light beiges and creams and adding pops of color-or in this case-black, gives this design a sense of balance, or yin and yang. These colors are on opposite ends of the spectrum but together create harmony and beautiful contrast. Showcasing natural materials such as bamboo, rattan, wicker, and wood, this style sparks a serene connection to nature.

Almost as if it bloomed from the ceiling, the “Florina” pendant from Hudson Valley Lighting evokes a whimsical and airy feeling that brings character to any space. Its “petals” are made of rattan caning and trimmed in white cotton, again bringing in more natural elements. The opal iridescence of the globe hidden beneath the petals adds to the whimsy of this light. The aged brass finish of the pendant’s “stem” gives it a modern flair without being flashy while clinging to the airy aesthetic.

Pictured just right of the “Florina” pendant is Duchateau’s wooden wall covering, “Intervals,” in the color Natural. This white oak creation can be installed on both the wall and ceiling and is great for both residential and commercial applications. Increasing its functionality, this product comes with a felt backing that provides acoustical privacy. “Intervals” comes packaged as tiles that are pieced together to create a wallcovering that gives any space an intriguing sense of dimension and depth.

Rounding out the natural essence of this Japandi design is the Fabuwood “Catalina” collection of kitchen cabinets in the color Woodline 4. These cabinets have a vertical wood-like graining and texture that compliments the “Intervals” wallcovering. This light and airy color tone is perfect for an organic Scandinavian inspired design. The appreciation of the beauty of the imperfect, or the Japanese idea of Wabi-Sabi, is highlighted in the imperfect yet clean lines of this textured finish.

Merging the organic colors and clean lines of Scandinavian design with the appreciation for both natural materials and unique crafted pieces in Japanese culture results in a beautiful aesthetic unlike any other. This style is a twist on the modern take on interior design that catches the eye and transforms any interior into a natural escape.
